It was founded in 1970 on the very first Earth Day ever celebrated. To date, it has introduced at least 130 new gardens in NYC since the Green Space program’s inception in 1975.
Grow NYC is another charity organization that is working towards a greener, sustainable future. It has participated in the set up of more green spaces over the years, launched awareness programs for recycling initiatives, and also runs a network of farmer’s networks as well as relevant educational programs.
It also supports various Zero Waste Programs initiated by the NYC Department of Sanitation. Grow NYC uses its workforce to spread information about the usefulness of recycling items and set up events on composting food scraps and repurposing waste that most of us choose to throw away.
The organization has also trained experts known as Environmental Ambassadors as part of its community recycling training given to NYCHA residents. Food recycling is part of the initiative as well. The goal is to sell the food at the Greenmarket. Items left over are then donated to food pantries, food banks, and soup kitchens in NYC.
Feel free to donate textiles, paired shoes, accessories, and clothing to Grow NYC. You will find donation bins in all major locations in NYC as well as drop-off points in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Bronx.
Moreover, donations are also accepted by Wearable Collections, a partner to Grow NYC which is a for-profit clothing recycling company. It has set up donation boxes with residential building owners that sponsor their clothing recycling bins.
If you can not drop off the items yourself, the organization will arrange for donation pickups through an online form you will find on its official website.
Furthermore, you can contribute through Stop N Swap events that are sponsored by Grow NYC. These platforms encourage users to swap their old clothes that are still of usable quality, toys, books, games, houseware, and more.
